The protests were part of a conflict between the [[Chinese democracy movement]] and the [[Communist Party of China]]. The protest started because of the death due to illness of the former [[General Secretary of the Communist Party of China]] [[Hu Yaobang]], who was ousted in February [[1987]] after protests in Tiananmen in 1986 for opposing harsh punishments.
