In a twist on the original game, players must now locate flags and whoever has found the most by the end wins (i.e. the first person to get 26 or more mines wins). There are 51 mines on the map. If you find a flag you get to continue, otherwise it becomes your opponent's turn. Players get the one-off option to "bomb" a 5×5 area if they are losing, and get all the flags in that area (hence it is possible to get more than 26 mines).

in April 2009, the Australian Minesweeper Flags tournament, held by the Minesweeper Flags Federation, MSFF, prior being MSF(website ___domain being negotiated due to conflict with www.msf.org.au , Médecins Sans Frontières), took place in Sydney. The ___location was a warehouse in Redfern, where specific MSN accounts were being created, in order to facilitate a LAN game, where each computer had all fellow LAN computers added on MSN. The competition was strictly watched, due to numerous "hacks" released on the internet, however, no one was caught cheating. There was no monetary prize, only the title, of MSF champion. After many difficult matches, and the final being the best of 21, the winner was LL, initials as they wish to not be fully named, with the runner up being DB. The winner was crowned MSF mach1ne. The runner up, being desperate for the 2010 championship, has publicly revealed their msn on various websites, being [e-mail]. Note that this email is the one used at the competition, particularly taking in mind "mambo", an intertextual allusion to the mambo style of MSF, consequently revealed in DB's playing style.

There has been increasing controversy over the validity of the tournament, as MSF has been described as 80% luck. This can be true in casual games, where players often click randomly, to guess mines. In pro circles, clicking a square where a mine is DEFINITELY not present is often the case, as it will not subject them to "cascading". However, this is not advised at home with friends as it may cause hate, and subject you to high rates of game cancelling, due to the time consumption.
