Arts and Humanities Focus Program, commonly referred to as Arts, is a special focus high school in Lincoln, Nebraska dedicated to nurturing the passions and work of local ninth to twelfth grade students interested in pursuing an education in the arts. It is located at 643 South 25th Street and holds class from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the regular LPS school year.
History
The program opened its doors to students in the fall of 1999 in a former Coca-Cola bottling plant which it shares to this day with other private businesses. The initial teaching staff included five teachers but district wide budget cuts caused staff reshuffling that left the program with four full time teachers for the 2004–05 school year.
Programs and Partnerships
The program's current regular activities include:
* An entry in Lincoln's First Friday art gallery exhibitions on the first Friday of every month, where the students show off their newest work.
* Several visits to the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery
* The occasional visit to an academic lecture forum or welcoming of a guest lecturer to the program
* A partnership with the Arts are Basic Aesthetic Education program
The Arts and Humanities Focus program has welcomed several speakers over the past six semesters including actor/director Peter Riegert, New York mime Bill Bowers, DC Comics and Marvel Comics cartoonist Bob Hall and director Rodney Evans to name a few.
Past speakers visited have included author Daniel Quinn, author/activist Howard Zinn and President of the ACLU Nadine Strossen.
