In [[1995]], the master-planned community of Kingwood was annexed to the city of [[Houston]]. Some residents in the community were opposed to it and tried to set up a petition in [[1999]] for deannexation, but they failed. Banners that read "Free Kingwood" can occasionally still be seen.

Kingwood pupils attend school in the [[Humble Independent School District]]. The high school is Kingwood High, and their mascot is the mustangs. It is a division super 5A high school.
