Naples is one of the main cities of [[w:Italy|Italy]], directly built on the [[w:Mediterranean sea|Mediterranean sea]], at about 200 km south of [[w:Rome|Rome]]. With more than 1 million inhabitants only in the city center, Naples is the third biggest town in Italy.

Founded more than 2800 years ago (8th century BC), Naples is [[w:List of cities by time of continuous habitation|one of the most ancient cities in the world]]. FoundedBorn as a Greek colony of [[w:Cumae|Cuma]] and virtually positioned in the geographical center of the Mediterranean basin, it has an unmatched heritage as a place of exchange between cultures. This is directly reflected in the structure and in the monuments of the city, a mixture of Greek, Roman, Norman, Sveve, Spanish and French elements.

As a testimoniance of its extraordinary history, the Naples' region hosts an unparalleled concentration of UNESCO's World Heritage sites: the Center of Naples itself; the Roman archeological sites of [[w:Pompeii|Pompeii]], [[w:Herculaneum|Herculaneum]], [[w:Oplontis|Oplontis]] and [[w:Stabiae|Stabiae]]; the [[w:Royal Palace of Caserta|Royal Palace of Caserta]]; the [[w:San Leucio|Royal site of S. Leucio]] and the [[w:Aqueduct of Vanvitelli|Aqueduct of Vanvitelli]]. It is also within short distance from the [[w:Vesuvius|Vesuvius]], the only active volcano of the continental Europe, itself a World Biosphere's Site of UNESCO (Somma-Vesuvius and Golden Mile).
