Dopo anni di risultati altalentanti e non troppo entusiasmanti passati in [[Football Conference|Conference]]nel 2003 riuscì ad ottenere la promozione in [[Football League Third Division|Division 3]] (oggi[[Football League Two|Football League 2]]) e l'anno seguente in [[Football League One|Football League 1]].

Nel 2007 ha vinto il [[Football League Trophy]] battendo 3 a 2 ai supplementari il [[Bristol Rovers F.C.|Bristol Rovers]].

Nella stagione nella [[2007]]/[[2008]] ha vinto i [[play-off]] ed è approdata nella[[Football League Championship]], la seconda serie del [[Campionato di calcio inglese|campionato inglese]].

==Stadio==

Dopo 85 anni trascorsi allo stadio [[Belle Vue (football)|Belle Vue]] nel 2007 è stato inaugurato il nuovo impianto costato [[Pound sterling|£]]32 milioni di sterline. Il nuovo impianto ha 15.231 posti seduti coperti. Questo impianto è stato realizzato rispettando tutte le normative per permettere di disputare anche partite in campo europeo.

E' probabilmente l'unico impianto costruito nelle immediate prossimità di un lago.
