It signed on the air on September 1, 1955 as KARD-TV, the third television station in Wichita. In 1962, after the FCC ruled that central and western Kansas was part of the Wichita market, KARD merged with KGLD-TV, channel 2 in Great Bend (sign-on date: November 28, 1954) and its satelites KCKT-TV in Garden City (sign-on date: November 5, 1958) and KOMC-TV, channel 8 in Oberlin. The three stations, known as the "Tri-Circle Network," brought NBC programming to central and western Kansas. The four stations began calling themselves the Kansas State Network (KSN), and eventually expanded their signal to reach 75% of Kansas plus portions of Nebraska. The stations changed their calls in 1983 to help viewers think of the four stations as parts of one large network. KARD became KSNW (for Kansas State Network Wichita), KGLD became KSNC (for Kansas State Network Central), KCKT became KSNG (for Kansas State Network Garden City) and KOMC became KSNK (for Kansas State Nebraska/Kansas--the station had moved its license to McCook, Nebraska).

KSN has the unique distinction of having their weather department located in a modern science museum, Exploration Place, located in the museum district in Wichita, KS and not in the actual station building. Visitors can watch the meteorologists do actual live weathercasts via remote access to the main station building. As of December 115, 2005 the KSN Weatherlab staff includes Meteorologists Dave Freeman, Mark Bogner, Leon Smitherman, Andrew Kozak and Dean Jones.

An architectural wonder, Exploration Place opened in 2000.
