Started in august 2004, wapedia brings the content of the wikipedia to mobile devices like mobile phones or PDAs. It uses a local database to be independent from the Wikipedia servers. So, the pages are served very fast. But it also fetchs the content from the Wikipedia servers on demand to serve always a recent version of every article. Old versions in the local database are only served if the wikipedia Servers doesn't respond fast enough.

It has its own database server which is independent from the Wikipedia servers and provides a search facility. Long pages are separated into smaller chunks. A description of the service can be found at http://www.en.wapedia.org.

At the moment 10 languages are supported.
