During the 2004 offseason, Cora signed as a free agent with Cleveland. In 2005, he appeared in 49 games for the Indians, with 22 starts at shortstop and 14 at second base, and hit .205 with a home run and eight RBI. On July 7, he was traded to Boston for infielder Ramón Vázquez.

Cora will begin the 2006 campaign backing up Alex González and Mark Loretta in the Boston infield.
In Boston, Cora was originally intended to provide a cushion for shortstop Edgar Rentería. However, with the trade of Renteria to the Atlanta Braves, Cora will take his position as starting shortstop.

Alex is the younger brother of former MLB utility player, Joey Cora. He is often mistaken for his brother and has earned the dubious nickname of Joey Cora, Jr.
