*Comment - tried these, but even with Photoshop's wonderful new Content Aware Fill on the Spot Healing Brush I can't get an acceptable result. Spot healing and clone stamping leave too many traces - the watermarks obscure too much important detail that would need to be redrawn, and then it's not enhancement/restoration, it's pretty much WP:OR - sorry, maybe someone else has more skill at this... ::A method I have effectively used before (on :File:Chester A. Arthur portrait c1882.jpg, for example) is using the upscaled thumbnail image available on the archive's image description page (i.e. this) to replace the watermark: the watermark is placed in different positions on the thumbnail and the full-scale images. Some additional cloning can then be used to make the upscaled and blurry areas seem more natural. It won't look perfect, but the watermarks are certainly removable. —Quibik (talk) 18:52, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
:::Did the first one. I don't think I'll have time to do the others, though. (As a tip to anyone else interested in working with the others: simply adding noise (extracted from the background, for example) to the blurry areas works surprisingly well. Also, the thumbnail images need gamma correction by ~0.67.) —Quibik (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Ok, let's start over here. I requested, and received, a scanned copy of the photo above. I've also rescanned the photo from the book, Making Michigan Move, which is where I discovered this photo. MDOT's scan from their archives was done at 72dpi, which resulted in 795 × 465 pixels, 175 KB. The scan I just did from the book came out at 3,294 × 1,916 pixels, 16.1 MB. The problem though is that the book was printed in in a weird sepia for the photos and blue for the text. As well, the scanned version from the book has a noticeable moiré pattern. Is there anything that can be done to salvage this photo? The first version has been nominated at WP:FPC, but it's just too low of resolution and garnering opposition left and right. <span style="background:green; padding:2px"><font color="white">Imzadi</font> <font color="white">1979</font> <font color="white"><big>→</big></font></span> 14:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
Opinion: You won't really get anywhere with that scan from the book, I don't think. All you have there is a high resolution scan of a low resolution image so all you've done is perfectly captured the halftone screen used by the printer, resulting in "dots the size of golfballs" - hence the moire. Open it in an editor, and zoom in on, say, the power pole in the trees just right of centre until you can see the halftone dots. The dots are 20-25% of the width of the pole. Now do the same with your b/w image and you'll see that even though it isn't very good there is far more detail even in that, without the giant halftone dots. That's because they scanned an original photo. The only way to get more detail is to get a scan done from the photo at higher than 72 dpi - which I think you indicated you can't do. It doesn't matter how well you scan the book, the intermediate step of the printer applying his halftone screen has removed the detail. <font face="Arial" color="#0645AD">Begoon</font><font style="color:#808080;font-weight:bold;">talk</font> 01:40, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
:I agree with Begoon here. The halftoned image is definitely a lower resolution. See, for example my attempt at removing the halftoning (speckle removal + gaussian blur + size reduction). Despite that, your book scan should probably be JPEG compression at a setting of 95, rather than 100. 100 doesn't mean lossless, in most cases it just needlessly increases the file size. gringer (talk) 05:19, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
I cleaned up the half-tone that was causing the moiré patterns (and desaturated). I uploaded that version without any additional adjustments in consideration of anyone else interested in improving that image. I also uploaded another version with some quick additional contrast adjustments. Compared to the other scan this image is indeed higher-resolution, but unfortunately absolutely lacks in shadow detail.<br/>
For other editors: feel free improve upon the first image. Additional noise reduction and level adjustments will probably be useful. You can overwrite my second image. —Quibik (talk) 13:54, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
:Ok - you gave me an idea. I took the original low res image, resized and cropped it to exactly match the cleaned up book scan, then blended the book scan on top of the low res to give it resolution and detail. It's uploaded above. I haven't done any other clean up except for a tiny blur to the book scan to get rid of the last traces of halftone dots. See what you think. It can certainly still be cleaned up a bit, and levels/contrast adjusted. This was more a "proof of concept" before getting into that.
