In the fifth series the Doctor's new companion, Amy Pond, attempts to seduce him at the end of "Flesh and Stone". In "The Big Bang", she approaches him during her wedding reception, saying, "You absolutely, definitely may kiss the bride." On both occasions, the Doctor resists her advances.

Durante una visita alla Hollywood degli anni '50, il Dottore si fidanza per errore con l'attrice Marilyn Monroe ma tranquillizza i suoi amici dicendo che «il matrimonio non era legalmente valido».
In the 2010 special episode "A Christmas Carol", the Eleventh Doctor finds himself accidentally engaged to film star Marilyn Monroe during a visit to 1950s Hollywood. Although he follows through with the wedding, he later claims it took place in a chapel that wasn't "legitimate".

The 2011 series continues to explore the Doctor's romantic potential, by strongly implying that he will eventually fall in love and have a relationship with River Song. In the two-part story "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead", the character Professor River Song reveals herself to be a future companion of the Doctor, and although the exact nature of her relationship with his future self remains unrevealed, it is intimate enough that she is openly affectionate towards him, and she is the only known person to be told his true name. Amy Pond believes her to be the Doctor's wife, which he neither denies nor confirms; when the Doctor asks if she's married, she ambiguously replies, "Are you asking?" and then says "Yes" - though whether this means she's married (and to whom) or whether she's accepted what could be taken as a proposal is unclear. At the end of the episode "Day of the Moon", River is taken back to prison by the Doctor, where she kisses him romantically, suggesting she and the Doctor have a romantic relationship. At the end of the 2011 episode "Day of the Moon"", River kisses the doctor after he returned her to the Stormcage. Although it was the first time for the Doctor, River implies that it was not the first time for her, and is heartbroken when she understands that if it was the first time for the Doctor, it would be the last time for her. After the battle of Demons Run in "A Good Man Goes to War" River twice calls the Doctor "my love".
