Inizialmente, come chitarrista e compositore, egli si ispirò alle band [[blues-rock]] come i [[Led Zeppelin]], sebbene già da adolescente si recasse in treno a New York per entrare nei [[jazz clubs]] come il Village Vanguard e il Village Gate. Dopo aver visto una performance dei Mel Lewis Orchestra, decise di creare una propria band [[rock n' roll]].

Nel [[1979]], Setzer formò la sua band di [[rockabilly]], gli [[Stray Cats]]. La lineupformazione era composta da Brian alla [[chitarra]] e [[cantante|voce]], [[Slim Jim Phantom]] alla [[batteria (musica)|batteria]] e [[Lee Rocker]] al [[contrabbasso]]. Gli [[Stray Cats]] catturarono l'attenzione dell'America con il loro album ''[[Built for Speed]]'' uscito nel [[1982]], al cui interno si trovano due brani arrivati in Top Ten: "Rock This Town" (#9) e "Stray Cat Strut" (#3), così come il seguente album del [[1983]]: ''[[Rant 'N Rave]]'', al cui interno si trovano due singoli di successo: "(She's) Sexy + 17" (#5), e "I Won't Stand In Your Way" (#35).

Negli [[anni 1990|anni novanta]], Setzer sentì un richiamo verso lo [[swing]] e la musica da [[big band]], quando formò [[The Brian Setzer Orchestra]]. La band ha pubblicato 8 [[album discografico|album]] e due [[DVD]] live.
