Welsh played for Dipton United, [[Annfield Plain F.C.|Annfield Plain]], [[Durham City A.F.C.|Durham City]] and [[Portsmouth F.C.|Portsmouth]] before joining [[Port Vale F.C.|Port Vale]] in May 1935.
