Technically You could call python regius the blue spotted cobra eating python.... it would be absurd but my point is that latin names are giving for a reason... there set in stone... The article should give the common name and the latin name. When it comes to the common name, maybe we should look at which name is used most frequently in the english language? In linguistics it is most often being done to settle similar disputes, about specific words and which one is better. You need a big text corpus, search for the relevant terms / strings, and look at the frequencies. So lets do it, as a text corpus i will simply choose the internet according to google, and i will use google to search for the specific strings. "ball python" about 2,060,000 results, "royal python" about 482,000 results. So ball python is the winner, while royal python is also definitively in use.
