Essendo un editor [[WYSIWYG]], FrontPage è progettato per nascondere il codice HTML, permettendo ai principianti di progettare siti Web con facilità.

La prima evidenza che FrontPage ebbe il nome della Microsoft fu con il rilascio di [[Windows NT 4.0]] Server e il suo [[Web server]] costituente [[Internet Information Services]] 2.0. Incluso nel CD di NT 4.0, FrontPage 1.1 funzionava su NT 4.0 (Server o Workstation) o Windows 95. FrontPage in origine necessitava di [[Plug-in|plugin]] per il server, chiamati IIS Extensionss. L'estensione impostata fu rinnovata per l'inclusione nella lina di prodotti Office con Office 97, poi rinominata [[FrontPage Server Extensions]] (FPSE). Both sets of extensions needed to be installed on the target Web server for its content and publishing features to work. Microsoft offered both Windows and Unix-based versions of FPSE. FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions worked with earlier versions of FrontPage as well. FPSE 2002 was the last released version which also works with FrontPage 2003 and was later updated for IIS 6.0 as well.
