Reading the edits, it looks like it was originally written differently (from the rightmost digit, moving left...), but the confusion is in what is being described- creating a check digit for a number or validating a number with a check digit. The current description is creating a check digit for a number, so "from the rightmost digit, moving left..." is also incorrect, since the original number does not have the check digit.
