On [[15 June]] [[2006]], the New Zealand television industry announced that it would be creating its own version of digital Freeview. The development will include [[TV3 (New Zealand)|TV3]], [[Canwest|Canwest's]] C4 and [[TVNZ|TVNZ's]] [[TV1 (New Zealand)|TV1]] and [[TV 2 (New Zealand)|TV2]]. [[Sky TV]]-owned [[Prime TVTelevision New Zealand|Prime]] will also be likely to join the others for free-to-air broadcasting.

The idea has been generally well-accepted, though the [[decoder]] topbox will require the spending of NZ$200-300. However, broadcasting minister [[Steve Maharey]] did say that "it could end up being as low as [NZ]$75". However, the media has attacked this, saying that in the instance that an [[investment]] in a decoder is required first to get the free-to-air channels, the project is subsequently not free-to-air.
