::Expecting users to subst: a template that they have previously used without substitution could cause resentment at the change to an established practice. My comments at Template talk:EP#s, t, and u outputs don't make a lot of sense to me... also apply here. For a template to display the current protection level whilst an edit request is open has its merits; but once the request is closed (whether done, not done, or otherwise), the displayed message should not change again. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:18, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
*I've started working on this. All levels of protection are now detected, and a generic answered message is in use. We still need to make the autodetection override the displayed level, and handle the edge cases described above. **Mr. Stradivarius Autodetection is now fully implemented. Based on the feedback above, the way I've implemented it is as follows: Usage of the template in the wikitext doesn't change at all (so no worrying about substing anything). If all of the pages the request affects are at the same protection level (which is vacuously true if it only affects one page), and that level is not "unprotected", and the new "force" parameter isn't set, then the template behaves in both display and categorization as if it were called with the correct protection level. Does this seem acceptable to everyone? Jackmcbarn (talk) 22:11, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
