Position your cursor after the sentence or paragraph that the citation is intended to support. Click the "Reference" icon in the VisualEditor toolbar. A dialog will appear, with a text box in which you can either insert a [[Wikipedia:CITE#Citation_style|plain citation]] or a citation template.
