WJAR was one of four NBC O&Os in smaller markets that were put up for sale on [[January 9]], [[2006]], along with stations in [[Columbus, Ohio]]; [[Birmingham, Alabama]]; and [[Raleigh, North Carolina]]. Except for the Birmingham station, these stations were also owned by Outlet. On [[April 6]] [[2006]], [[NBC Universal]] and [[Media General]] announced that Media General would purchase WJAR as part of a $600 million four station deal between the two companies[http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=9724]. IfThe deal was approved by the sale[[Federal goesCommunications Commission|FCC]] in late May 2006. Upon finalization of the throughtransaction, WJAR would become Media General's first TV station in New England.
 
As of June [[2006]], the FCC approved the transfer of NBC's Columbus, Raleigh and Providence stations; approval of the transfer of NBC's Birmingham station is contingent on the sale of Media General's existing Birmingham station.
