I was told that he was named after a sword and/or the maker who is well known in Japan. No, I don't have any source from namco to back this up, but the evidence is already there. There is a famous sword maker called Yoshimitsu, and the character is distinguished by his sword... I just put two and two together. If namco has some contact address I would ask them to confirm this, but I would be very surprised if the company took my question seriously, let alone give me an answer. It would use a lot of their time to find this out. The only real way to get an answer would be to send a personal letter to the character designer himself, and I don't think that is going to happen.
