Driver: San Francisco appartiene al genere [[Sandbox#Videogiochi|sandbox]] ed è uno dei pochi giochi di guida presenti in questo genere. Una delle caratteristiche principali del gioco è il sistema chiamato Shift. Si tratta, in breve, della possibilità di passare da un'auto all'altra anche se situate in punti diversi della mappa e in un qualsiasi momento.
