The district is part of the [[Wellington (region)|Wellington]] region. It includes towns such as [[Featherston, New Zealand|Featherston]], [[Martinborough]] (a famous wine-producing area with central streets forming a [[Union Jack]]), and [[Greytown]] (where [[Arbor Day]] was first celebrated in New Zealand), and topographical features such as [[Palliser Bay]] and [[Lake Wairarapa]]. Its western boundary is the watershed along the [[Rimutaka Range]].
