The updates were rolled out in phases with the first phase occurring in July 2009 and the final in April 2012.<ref>[http://www.ncarb.org/News-and-Events/News/2011/10-IDP-2.aspx Final Phase of IDP 2.0 to be Implemented April 2012]</ref>In July 2015, the IDP was [http://www.ncarb.org/Experience-Through-Internships/IDP2-Experience-Categories-Areas.aspx streamlined] to reduce experience hours required from 5,600 to 3,740. (Some jurisdictions require documentation of additional hours to meet their experience requirement. NCARB recommends that you submit all experience until you have satisfied your jurisdiction’s requirement. See individual jurisdiction’s requirements [http://www.ncarb.org/Experience-Through-Internships/IDP2-Experience-Categories-Areas/Experience-Requirement-by-State.aspx '''here'''].) In June 2016, the experience areas will be overhauled to align with six broad, practice-based areas, and the program will be renamed the Architectural Experience Program (AXP).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.ncarb.org/News-and-Events/News/2016/Jan-Rename-IDP.aspx|title=NCARB - National Council of Architectural Registration Boards|website=www.ncarb.org|access-date=2016-04-07}}</ref> These changes were recommended based on the research from the 2012 Practice Analysis of Architecture, and an initiative to retire the term “intern.”<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.ncarb.org/News-and-Events/News/2016/Jan-Rename-IDP.aspx|title=NCARB - National Council of Architectural Registration Boards|website=www.ncarb.org|access-date=2016-04-07}}</ref>
In order to address the findings of the 2012 Practice Analysis, NCARB began an in-depth review and overhaul of the experience program to ensure that the requirements continued to adhere to current architectural practice. In addition, NCARB decided to rename the IDP to the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) as part of an effort to sunset the term “intern.”
The introduction of the new name and the overhaul were both launched on June 29, 2016. In the AXP, the previous 17 experience categories were realigned into six broad areas that reflect the current practice of architecture.
