PODC was first organised on 18–20 August 1982, in [[Ottawa]], [[Canada]].<ref>Robert L. Probert, [[Michael J. Between 1982 and 2009, PODC was always held in a North American ___location – usually in USA or Canada, and once in Mexico.<ref name="podc-dblp"/> In 2010, PODC was held in Europe for the first time in its history,<ref>[http://portal.acm.org/browse_dl.cfm?coll=Portal&dl=ACM&idx=SERIES391&linked=1&part=series PODC in ACM Digital Library].</ref> and in the same year, its European sister conference DISC was organised in the USA for the first time in its history.<ref name="disc-dblp"/><ref>[http://listserv.acm.org/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0910&L=PODC&T=0&F=&S=&P=725 DISC'2010 Preliminary Call for Papers].</ref> PODC 2010 took place in [[Zürich]], [[Switzerland]], and DISC 2010 took place in [[Cambridge, Massachusetts]].

Since 2000, a review of the PODC conference appears in the year-ending issue of the ACM SIGACT News Distributed Computing Column.<ref>[http://people.csail.mit.edu/idish/sigactNews/ ACM SIGACT News Distributed Computing Column].</ref> The review is usually written by a member of the distributed computing research community.
