It traces its beginnings to the [[MIT Servomechanics Laboratory]], where much work on guidance systems was done during [[World War II]]. It is linked to the [[Charles Stark Draper Laboratory]] located nearby, and closely works with the [[Lincoln Laboratory]] just outside of [[Boston]], [[Massachusetts]].
 
Affectionately called ''LIDS'', the laboratory has hosted several luminaries over the years, such as [[Claude Shannon]]. Current faculty include [[Robert G. Gallager]] and [[Seth Lloyd]].
