I've been researching MGRS for a few days, but the above is totally opaque to me. Does this have something to do with the fact that locations that border GZJs are canonicalized by some software libraries (e.g. 17SKT --> 16SGB5807198790)? So each latitude band is 8 degrees, right? Look at figure 1. It doesn't quite match. http://nationalgrid.s3.amazonaws.com/webmercator/index.html shows it matching properly, (a least up to 40 degrees) so can someone else confirm I'm not crazy and that figure 1 is wrong?
