== Biografia ==

Dopo aver studiato storia dell'arte a [[Vienna]], divenne allievo e assistente di [[Cornelis Hofstede de Groot]] e lavorò alla realizzazione dell'[[RKD]] ([[Netherlands Institute for Art History]]) during the years 1934–1966, becoming a Dutch citizen in 1940 and becoming director of the RKD on 1 January 1954.<ref name=RKD>Horst Gerson in the [[RKD]]</ref> He was the nephew of [[Karl Lilienfeld]], who had assisted Hofstede de Groot before him. In 1966 he became professor of art history at the [[Rijksuniversiteit Groningen]], and during the years 1966–1975 he was head of the [[Kunsthistorisch Instituut Groningen]].<ref name=RKD/> He is known for his publications, starting with his 'Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts' published in 1942.<ref name=RKD/>

Laureatosi in medicina, lasciò questa professione per dedicarsi al giornalismo: fu infatti per qualche tempo direttore del ''Morning Herald''. Oltre a edizioni delle opere di [[William Shakespeare]], [[James Beattie]], [[Henry Fielding]], [[Samuel Johnson]], [[Joseph Warton]], [[Alexander Pope]], [[Edward Gibbon]] e [[Henry Saint-John Bolingbroke]], pubblicò un ''[[Dizionario biografico generale di Alexander Chalmers|Dizionario biografico generale]]'' in 32 volumi (1812-1817); un ''Glossario Shakspeariano'' (1807); un edizione dell'opera ''Shakespeare'' di [[George Steevens]] (1809); e il ''Saggista britannico'', contenente riferimenti al ''[[Tatler]]'' e all'''[[The Observer|Observer]]'', con prefazioni biografica e storica e un indice generale.

Spesso gli viene attribuita la citazione "Per essere felici è essenziale avere qualcosa da fare, qualcuno da amare e qualcosa in cui sperare" (The three grand essentials of happiness are: Something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for)<ref>In altri siti e testi, questa citazione è attribuita a "Allan K. Chalmers". È comunque anche stata ascritta a [[Joseph Addison]], che visse nel periodo 1672–1719. In realtà è una citazione del sacerdote americano [[George Washington Burnap]] (1802–1859), che si trova nell'opera ''L'ambito e i doveri della donna: Lezioni (1848)'', Lezione IV.</ref>,
