Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) – scientific project initiated at the end of August 2016 by Polish scientists from Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN in Kraków, whose purpose is the detection of cosmic rays and the search for dark matter. Its aim is to involve as many people as possible in the construction of a global system of cosmic ray detectors, thanks to which it will be possible to examine the essence of dark matter. Thanks to a photosensitive sensor and a GPS module, a smartphone works perfectly as a detector that reaches particles from space.

Just install free application, connectwhich thewill turn your phone into a cosmic ray detector, connect to the charger and arrange it horizontally, for example, put on a table or bedside cabinet. TheIt is also important that the cameras are well covered, for example with a piece of black adhesive tape, and notifications indicated by the blinking of the LEDs are turned off. If a radiation particle passes through a photosensitive matrix in the phone, it will automaticallystimulate several pixels, which will be noticed sendby the collectedprogram datathat sends information to the applicationserver in Krakow. Thanks to the GPS module, you will also know where and when the event took serversplace.

The CREDO project is not limited to astrophysical research. If we could construct a global network of cosmic ray detectors, geophysical research could also be carried out. The authors of the project want to, for example, verify the hypothesis about the existence of a relationship between changes in the intensity of cosmic rays and earthquakes. It may sound like science fiction, but such a hypothesis is actually discussed in professional literature and for the first time it will be an opportunity to test it.
