My wildguess is that it takes the difference between the last and the beforelast samples, and reapplies the difference between the last and the current sample, and stores -8÷32768, ... 0, 1÷32768, 2÷32768, 3÷32768, 4÷32768, 5÷32768, ... 7÷32768 in a signed nibble.
