==Storia==
Nel 1977, in piena era space disco, produzioni francesi come "Magic Fly" degli [[Space (gruppo musicale)|Space]] e l'anno seguente "Star Peace" dei [[Droids]], cominciavano a fondere il sound cosmico con elementi ritmici della synth-pop. Successivamente nel 1982 e negli anni a seguire, anche il progetto italiano Xenon offrì il suo contributo con lavori come "The Adventure", seguiti da "Symphony" nel 1984 ed "Opera" nell'anno successivo, nei quali il sound cosmico abbracciava le ritmiche del filone Italo Disco oramai entrato fortemente in voga in Europa. Difatti prima di divenire uno stile a se stante, la spacesynth essenzialmente nasceva come una versione strumentale della Italo Disco, focalizzata sui sintetizzatori e le atmosfere spaziali. Nel 1983 un progetto italiano, The Creatures, mostrava chiaramente questa tendenza in "Believe In Yourself". Nello stesso anno anche un altro progetto italiano, Hipnosis, esordiva con il singolo "Pulstar / End Title (Blade Runner)", rivisitando e modernizzando la space disco con elementi Italo Disco. Nel frattempo, sempre nello stesso anno, la fusione tra Space Disco ed Italo Disco era evidente anche nei lavori "Chinese Revenge" e "Japanese War Game" del progetto italiano Koto, fusione che si andava a delineare sempre più con il loro "Visitors" del 1985 e "Jabdah" dell'anno successivo, contraddistinguendosi per il loro innovativo sound: è proprio in questo periodo che i critici coniarono il termine "spacesynth", sottogenere musicale del quale il progetto Koto fu tra i più rappresentativi.<ref>{{Cita libro|autore=Francesco Cataldo Verrina|titolo=THE HISTORY OF ITALO DISCO|anno=2015|editore=Lulu.com|città=|p=|pp=|ISBN=1326304313, 9781326304317}}</ref> Anche il progetto Italo Disco italiano Cyber People contribuì fortemente alla nascita della spacesynth con i singoli "Polaris" del 1984, "Void Vision" del 1985 e successivamente "Digital Signal Processor" nel 1988. In parallelo Michiel van der Kuy e Rob van Eijk crearono il progetto "Proxyon" con i tre singoli "Space Hopper" del 1987, "Space Warriors" dello stesso anno, e "Space Travellers" del 1988. Nel frattempo, da solo Michiel van der Kuy crea il progetto Rygar nel 1988 con un LP intitolato "Star Tracks", oggi considerato un altro classico della spacesynth. A seguire anche il progetto "Syntech" di Edwin van der Laag e Huib Schippers, ebbe un suo modesto successo all'interno della scena spacesynth con "By Trial and Error" del 1988, conosciuto anche come "ByT&E".
È quel caratteristico sound ereditato dall'Italia e sviluppato nei Paesi Bassi, a rappresentare la nascita della spacesynth.
Tra le più caratteristiche etichette discografiche legati alla spacesynth dai suoi albori, vi furono la tedesca "[[ZYX Music]]" (e la sua sotto etichetta olandese "Galaxis"), la "Hotsound", la "Memory Records", l'Italiana "Beat Box", la "Made Up Records", la polacca "Snake's Music" e la "Rams Horn".
Mentre nei Paesi Bassi la spacesynth si era finalmente caratterizzata come un sottogenere a se stante, ancora largamente denominato synthdance o spacedance, in Italia un gran numero di produzioni, come ad esempio "Beach Love (Instrumental)" e "Rofo's Theme" entrambe del 1987 del progetto Rofo, mostravano molti dei caratteristici elementi del sound spacesynth, rimanendo tuttavia saldamente ancorate alla italo disco, all'euro disco ed al synth pop.
Successivamente, con l'inizio degli anni '90 la popolarità della spacesynth cominciò a descrescere, quasi sparendo del tutto, mentre eurodance, house, tecno ed i suoi sottogeneri dominavano le classifiche musicali.<ref name=":0" /> A tener in piedi le produzioni spacesynth la casa discografica "Hypersound Productions"<ref>{{Cita web|url=https://www.discogs.com/it/label/15538-Hypersound-Productions|titolo=Hypersound Productions|sito=Discogs|accesso=2016-11-02}}</ref> fondata nel 1994 (che ha chiuso i battenti nel Dicembre 2014) da Humphrey Robertson ebbe un ruolo cruciale, coniando inoltre lo stile "Synthesizer Dance", considerato generalmente sinonimo di spacesynth (ma che strettamente indica uno stile musicale non necessariamente legato alle tematiche spaziali o sci-fi). L'influente artista Humphrey Robertson grazie ai suoi progetti Ciber People", "Hypnosis", "Daylight" e "Based On Bass" riuscì comunque a mantenere viva la spacesynth attraverso tutti gli anni '90 ed anche oltre, pubblicando, sotto le sue ali, svariati artisti oggi noti della spacesynth.
Alla fine degli anni '90 l'interesse per la spacesynth, e per il suo caratteristico sound melodico anni 80, crebbe divenendo mano a mano sempre più popolare.<ref name=":0" /> Nel 1999 nacque l'etichetta discografica "AXIS Records"<ref>{{Cita web|url=https://www.discogs.com/it/label/146961-Axis-Records-5|titolo=Axis Records (5)|sito=Discogs|accesso=2016-11-02}}</ref>, che nel 2005 si spostò nel Regno Unito divenendo "Alpha Centauri"<ref>{{Cita web|url=https://www.discogs.com/it/label/120710-Alpha-Centauri|titolo=Alpha Centauri|sito=Discogs|accesso=2016-11-02}}</ref>.
