==Critiques of CLT==
One of the most famous attacks on Communicative Language teaching was offered by Michael Swan in 1985 in the English Language Teaching Journal (ELT Journal 1985 39(1):2-12, and ELT Journal 1985 39(2):76-87). Henry Widdowson responded in defence of CLT, also in the ELT Journal (ELT Journal 1985 39(3):158-161).

More recently, also in the ELT Journal, [[Dr. Stephen Bax]] of [[Canterbury Christ Church University]] in the UK has argued that the dominance of CLT has led to the neglect of context in language pedagogy. Bax argued for an alternative to CLT as the central paradigm in language teaching via a 'context approach' which would place context at the heart of the profession. (ELT Journal 2003 57: 278-287). Jeremy Harmer responded in defence of CLT in the same volume (pp288-294).
