He worked as a journalist on the staff of the ''[[Daily Telegraph]]'' and ''[[Sunday Telegraph]]'' from 1955 to 1961 specialising in China, and also reported for [[BBC]] television ''[[Panorama (TV series)|Panorama]]'' from 1963 to 1965.
