Dopo un affermato periodo in [[Major League Soccer|MLS]] con i [[Columbus Crew]] arriva al [[Nottingham Forest Football Club|Nottingham Forest]] nella stagione 1999/2000 per un milione e mezzo di sterline. Esordì il 24 novembre [[1999]] contro il [[{{Calcio Portsmouth F.C.|Portsmouth]]N}} e segnò dopo soli 6 minuti.

Il Nottingham fu costretto, a causa delle difficoltà finanziarie, a cedere John al [[Birmingham City Football Club|Birmingham City]] l'8 febbraio [[2002]] per centomila sterline.
