These circuits perform the same functions as conventional circuits composed of [[Passivity (engineering)|passive]] components, such as [[capacitor]]s, [[inductor]]s, and [[transformer]]s. They are used mostly at [[microwave]] frequencies, where conventional components are difficult (or impossible) to implement.
