Faded 1918 newspaper photograph of military officers

l to r: General Pétain, Marshal Haig, General Foch, General Pershing

Can anything be done to improve this faded, 1918 newspaper photograph? For an example in context, see Philippe Petain#End of war. It seems dark, faded, and muddy. I'll leave it to your judgement what constitutes "improvement", but probably more contrasty, and maybe lighter, maybe sharper (is that even possible?) One thing I notice, is that Pétain image (left) seems noticeably lighter than the others, so not sure if parts of the image can be brightened or recontrasted more than other parts, but it seems like a slightly different treatment might be needed for Pétain than for the others.
