A Static Lullaby is a screamo/post-hardcore band formed in Chino Hills, California in 2001. Their sound consists of intense distorted or screaming vocals countered with melodic singing.

Biography

A Static Lullaby came together after a casual high school jam session led its members to quit their existing bands and come together as one. Formed in 2001 in Orange County, CA, the group began with singer Joe Brown, bassist Phil Pirrone, drummer Brett Dinovo, and guitarists Dan Arnold and Nathan Lindeman. Their first show was a mere two weeks after forming, and it started a buzz about the guys that they continued to build upon throughout the local circuit.[1]

In September 2001 the band record their first home made song called Withered. They released it as a demo and burnt cds. They did this for 2001 and 2002 and ended up doing a headlining tour of the West Coast and decided to print them with 3 songs from the first recording and a song from a different session. The band went out and sold 6,000 copies of it. DIY.

A Static Lullaby signed a contract with Ferret Records in 2002. They were in a tour called Hellfest and a lot of record labels were coming up to them. Joe was actually talking with someone from a different record label and Carl (Ferret) was sitting right there and he tapped on his shoulder and said, "Hey, I need to talk to you." So Carl was like "oh, alright whatever." So they talked it over, and the the band decided to go for that record label. After this, the band went on to create their first album called, "And Don't Forget To Breathe." The Screamo/ Post- Hardcore band spent 18 long months on the road supporting their debut album, and shared stages with such acts as AFI, My Chemical Romance and Brand New.

Their music style is often very similar to bands like From Autumn To Ashes and Underoath. They are well known for their explosive on-stage antics. Their second album, "Faso Latido" denoted a change in sound for the band, yet still kept with their much harsher sounding roots. The album was not critically or commercially successful, and failed to live up to the expectations of Columbia Records.

A Static Lullaby recently lost three of their original five band mates. Joe Brown and Dan Arnold are the only remaining two, and decided to continue the band. They added John Death on guitar, Dane Poppin on bass and Jarrod Alexander on drums. The new self-titled album was released on October 10th, 2006 on Fearless Records. Their MySpace features some of their new songs.

They are managed by Rodney Afshari of Inner Circle Management.

Drummer Jarrod Alexander recently rejoined Death by Stereo, in time for their new album that is due for release in 2007. [8] However, he has not left A Static Lullaby.

For A Static Lullaby, making music isn't an avenue to success or a path to riches, it's a means of survival, a way to confront chaos and hypocrisy without having a mental breakdown. The impassioned songs on their second album, Faso Latido, reflect the band's sincerity. "We really want to show people that music can be real and it can make you think and even change your life," Joe Brown (singer)says. "The more people that get that message from us, the better." [2]

Fragment

"I settled down in time to catch the opening band, A Static Lullaby. This is a relatively new band which features split vocals between the two guitarists and a band member who simply screams. I never really thought much of this band until witnessing the talent they displayed live."

Withered (EP) (2002)

Album Review

A Static lullaby is a group that was formed in 2001. They decided to produce an EP on their own label, and they succeeded in it selling 5000 copies. Now, they have just signed a contract with Ferret Rcords, which should propel their carrier more due to the great potential they have. The fans of 'Houseboys Night Out' will find out a resemblance in A static lullaby but with a well better style. Withered is an EP that contains only 4 small songs, but of a high quality.

The first song of the cd, Coils to hate, hate to me mixes a furious rhythm, a melodic guitar, the seriousness and intensity of the band throughout the song without useless breakdowns that certain bands would found interesting to include in their materials. The mixture of the voice of the first singer and the excessive vocal backs gives this group a charm and a special dynamics. The second and third song ( The Shooting Star That Destroy Us All and 'A Sip Of Wine Chased With Cyanide respectively ) are as good as the first one. With regards to the last song that entitles itself A Song For A Broken Heart this is the more 'calm', and melodic song, which has a great combination of melancholic guitar sounds and vocals (Lead vocals and back vocals), a beautiful love song.

Album Review
A Static Lullaby have released one of the best albums of the year, and its only their debut.
This is an album packed full of hardcore, emo and punk that'll have you aching for more, and at 40 minutes its quite a long album for its genre. Opener Nightmares Win 6-0 is a brilliant mix of swirling guitars, heart aching vocals and screams that sound so in place that you won't be surprised that its their lead singer. Because with many bands nowadays, the screamer is an instrumentalist (funeral for a friend, thursday...) and boy does he do a good job. Considering the range that the music hits, the screaming is perfect, and with Dan, their guitarist and vocalist, its a faultless mix of brutality and beauty.

The best tracks here are either 1, 4, 7 or 10. ASL have also done something that many bands choose not to do, they're last track is the final mark on the album. Many bands just stick any track as their last track, but with Charred Fields of Snow its clear that its at the end of the record that it belongs. It just sums the whole thing up and leaves you with the knowledge that its finished. [5]

Album Review
The group's commitment to their art shines through in an array of songs that transcend simple classification. Faso Latido is a striking blend of energy, volume, rage and blissful melody that exposes the band members' diverse tastes and reveals how much they're developed as musicians since their 2003 debut, Don't Forget to Breathe.
Anyone who values emotionally turbulent music will surely bond with Faso Latido, which draws from pop, punk, metal and rock without attaching itself strictly to any one form. And, instead of adhering to conventional verse/chorus song constructs, A Static Lullaby dives into more uncharted waters. Calmer Than You Are starts with an enticing hook that juts through a scratchy guitar volley, and builds with urgent, near-tribal beats. Faso Latido overlaps melodic howls with feral screams and features a spoken-word mid-section over a rhythms that rips, tumbles and flutters. And Godbless You (God Damnit) is largely atmospheric, driven by a mid-paced beat and tuneful vocals gliding over vaporous guitars and a bobbing bass line [6]

Album Review
A Static Lullaby put out an energetic album that stays in their safe zone, but makes breaks for something more expansive and melodic natured in songs like Mechanical Heart. Toughness isn't always about charring screamo vocals, and that's something A Static Lullaby still isn't safe to trek into, but they can.
The insurgence of screamo verses along heavy punk rock movements on their latest release affects tempo grips to have a ferocious bite while sequentially stewing an inferno of fluxing tones in a cyclone of turbulence. The screamo aspects also limit the album by centering everything around the layers of screaming vocals. They missed out on exploring their potential to integrate more melodic propulsions while keeping a hard rock edge which they begin to touch upon on their final track. [7]
