Brisbane State High School (BSHS) is a co-educational, state secondary school in Brisbane, Queensland. It was the first state secondary school established in Brisbane.
The school was founded in 1921 as the 'Normal School', at the corner of Adelaide and Edward Streets, in the Brisbane CBD. It was relocated to its current campus next to Musgrave Park at South Brisbane, in 1925.
BSHS is a member of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland Inc (GPS), with eight other (boys) private schools from the south-east region of Queensland. It is also a member of the Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association Inc (QGSSSA), with eight other (girls) private schools and one other co-educational school.
The school is highly competitive with the private schools of Brisbane, making it a popular school for students who could not gain entry to other expensive private schools in Brisbane. In fact, this was the underlying reason for the initial establishment of Brisbane State High- to provide free education to those academic students of the of the 1910's and 20's who were unsuccessful in their scholarship applications to other private schools but still had academic ability and were in need of a public school to foster and develop their academic abilities. This was, and still is, the fundamental basis for Brisbane State High's high academic reputation to this day.
