The Robot Wars was the first extended storyline for Judge Dredd during which the character became the most popular in the comic book 2000 AD. In the last of his Dredd scripts (prog 8) Pat Mills had introduced the idea that the future society of Mega City One relied on a caste of droids acting as slaves for their human masters, with Dredd having to destroy a renegade droid 'Call-Me-Kenneth'. This appealed to John Wagner who had created the character but so far not written for it. The first issue of 'The Robot Wars' has 'Call-Me-Kenneth' being revived in a new body but his malignant persona remains and after killing the human technician that restored him he calls upon the droids of the city to rise up against their masters. In the following war the Judges are neutralized but some droids remain loyal and led by Dredd are able to form a resistance movement. Dredd confronts Kenneth on the city's weather control centre who falls to his destruction. Wagner uses parodies of the speeches of Hitler for most of Kenneth's dialogue.
