Wabash Valley College is a community college located in Mount Carmel, Illinois. As of Fall, 2004, it had 1375 students. Conventional students often attend either Southern Illinois University Carbondale or University of Southern Indiana upon completion of their associate degrees. Out-of-state tuition fees are waived at USI, in exchange for similar discounts for Indiana students in Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. The school is extremely inexpensive, and still offers enticing scholarships to local students and national athletes. It offers numerous night classes and distance learning courses for non-traditional students. Occupational courses are offered in coal mining and diesel technologies as well as Commercial Driver's License training. Another major program at the school is their two year licensed practical nurse training program, which can also provide a springboard into a four-year program to become a registered nurse. English as a second language, or ESL, courses are offered in the district as well. Many foreign students seem to benefit from the safe, relaxed, small town environment of Mount Carmel.

Media program

Students in the Radio and Television Program operate a college radio station at 89.1mhz, WVJC The Bash that reaches as far as Evansville, Indiana that plays alternative music and hard rock, manned by student DJs. The program also operates a bulletin board type programing showing upcoming community events and taped church services. It is not broadcast over the air, and is only carried on channel 15 of the local cable system. It also irregularly airs a nightly newscast at 6:00 P.M. The station also covers breaking news and severe weather.
