Gameplay

Like the series on which it is based, Code Lyoko features both side-scrolling gameplay and 3D gameplay. In the real world, side-scrolling gameplay is used, resembling that used in traditional role-playing games. One screen is used to display a map while the player moves on the other. On Lyoko, gameplay consists of third-person fighting, utilizing the special abilities of each character to defeat monsters and solve puzzles. There are a total of 15 chapters, divided into various side-scrolling levels and 3D levels. The ultimate goal is to shut down the towers on Lyoko by helping Aelita get to them. Solving a short puzzle game is required to shut down towers.

On Lyoko, each character has the powers they have in the show, though altered for gameplay reasons. Aelita is able to levitate over long distances. Aelita can also create a pink shield, and can turn this into a weak energy blast. Odd has his trademark laser arrows and shield, along with new weapons, cat bombs and lasers, and can climb up certain surfaces with his claws. Ulrich has his sword and super-speed. Finally, Yumi can throw her fans and is telekinetic. Upon being attacked by a monster, the player will lose "life points". With each ability (though not a weapon attack), the player has "Lyoko points". Using powers will drain these points. When they run down to zero, the player can no longer use abilities. Players can receive "data bits" by defeating monsters, which are used to buy power-ups and combo-attacks. Also, the power can only be used at specific points (such as Yumi can use telekinesis at a point with a large boulder or block).
