Dixie Howell

Millard Fillmore "Dixie" Howell(November 24, 1912 - March 2, 1971) was an American football running back and head coach.

College career

Howell played college football at the University of Alabama from 1932 to 1934. He was a consensus All-America selection in 1934 at the quarterback position, as well as being know as a god punter. He is also a member of the all-time Rose Bowl team and was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1970.

NFL Career

In 1937, Howell briefly played in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins.

Coaching Career

Howell started his coaching career at Arizona State University, where he was the head coach from 1938 to 1941, compiling a 23-15-4 record. He then went on to coach at the University of Idaho from 1947 to 1950 and compiled a record of 13=20-1.

Trivia

He is also mentioned in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird when one of the main characters named Scout finds of picture of Howell and shows it to her brother Jem tellling him it loooks like him, trying to cheer him up.
