The L7 is a general-purpose machine gun used by the British Army. It is based on the Belgian FN MAG (Fabrique Nationale Mitrailleur a Gaz) machine gun. It is chambered to fire the standard NATO calibre of 7.62 mm NATO. The gun has a weight of about 10.5 kg and has a cyclic rate of fire of 850 rounds per minute. The breech mechanism is very similar to the Browning Automatic Rifle designed during World War I.
In modified form, the L7 is also used on tanks and other vehicles under the L8 designation.
