Audience

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
We want to introduce Wikipedia to CS students of one higher school in Kisangani city, DRC.

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

French

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Physical, social medias, sms

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
Wikipedia is a great universal free knowledge data base. This is helpfull to get a quick overview of any topic you can imagine before going to a deep research. These are some reosons they will need to use Wikipedia :

  • it is well structured and organized (categories, infobox, …)
  • it is free of charge and freely licensed
  • contents are up-to-date
  • you can use it without Internet connectivity (Wow! That's amazing!)
  • it is available on more than 200 hundred languages (you have more chance to find Wikipedia in your local language :))

Project idea

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?

French

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?

Both in-person and online

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?

Think about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
The idea is to reach out CS students and install Kiwix on their computer. For that we have identified one higher school of CS and we plan to work with 50 students. First of all many students don't really know Wikipedia even though they use it because when they try to search the web (Google or any other search engine) they probably get a result that is from Wikipedia (WP). Most of the time they just copy/paste the content. What we are going to do in this event is to briefly present Wikipedia and its sister projects and of course how it works. We will also try to show how trustable can WP be because some academics don't like to care and prevent their learns from using. Next we will be doing a hand on exercise: installation of Kiwix with WP and Wikitionnary in French. We will give to each student a step-by-step front and back side printed HOW TO We have chosen CS students because from them we can get so many other readers, we will recommend them to install they same thing to their friends, relative, etc. At the end we will be answering to questions if there are any.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
The great and important outcome for us is to see so many people using Wikipedia any where (home, school, hospital) without wondering about Internet connectivity. For that purpose we will ask to our participants to give us a feedback one month after about what they did, how many machines they deployed Wikipedia offline on, etc. Other outcome will be photos, interviews, etc.

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
This project needs some engineers and of course financial aid to be successfully implemented. We will also need flyrs and booklets to share to participants.
