I Ching hexagram 01, depicted |||||| is named 乾 (qián), Force. Other translations: R. Wilhelm/C. Baynes, The Creative; G. Whincup, Strong Action; E. Shaughnessy (Mawangdui), The Key.
- Inner (lower) trigram is ☰ (||| 乾 qián) Force = (天) heaven
- Outer (upper) trigram is ☰ (||| 乾 qián) Force = (天) heaven
- The skeletal form of hexagram 01 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 28 - Excess, too much yang.
- The trigrams can be read bottom to top as "With perseverence (heaven in lower) comes singlemindedness (heaven in upper)" aka perseverence doubled. We can also interpret this as 'devotion to self' as compared to hexagram 02 focus on devotion to another/others.
- The analogy of the completeness of 'hexagram 01 is made to the general characteristics of 64 where we cover issues of avoiding completion, of never stopping, perpetual mediation, eternal learning of skills (and so never 'completing') etc etc.
