Cleversafe, Inc. is based in Chicago, Illinois and is the developer of Dispersed Storage software, which uses information dispersal algorithms (IDAs) to separate data into unrecognizable data slices and distribute them, via secure Internet connections, to multiple storage locations on a dispersed storage grid. With Dispersed Storage, transmission and storage of data is inherently private and secure. No single entire copy of the data is in one ___location, and only some of the slices need to be available in order to perfectly retrieve the data.
Brief History
Founded in 2004, the company is backed by NEA, OCA Ventures, Harrison Street Capital and Alsop-Louie Partners. Cleversafe is led by Chris Gladwin, who has created and managed a series of new technology companies. As the founding Chairman, President and CEO of MusicNow Mr. Gladwin built the company to 100,000 customers before its acquisition by Circuit City. Gladwin is an inventor on 40 issued and pending patents related to Dispersed Storage, wireless remote interface and Internet service technology. His work has been recognized by 32 industry awards for the products, services and companies he has created.
Technology
Cleversafe’s Information dispersal technology works similarly to TCP/IP packets.[citation needed] Information is stored on data slices on a network of local or remote servers. When the data needs to be accessed, it is reassembled and delivered back. One of the advantages to this technology is that it maintains overall data integrity because the file is reassembled from other slices. Any defined number of slices can be used to recreate all the original data. The technology is thought to be highly secure because none of the slices are usable on their own.
Open Source
Cleversafe is also the sponsor of an open source community[1] movement to help standardize Dispersed Storage technology through its cleversafe.org project. Users can download Dispersed Storage software and set up their own Dispersed Storage networks under the GPLOpen Source License Because Cleversafe separates data into unrecognizable Data Slices before sending using Cauchy Reed-Solomon Information Dispersal Algorithms the distribution can be executed via secure Internet connections, to multiple storage locations on a Dispersed Storage Network.
It won the 2007 ITA Citylights Newcomer award[2].
It won the 2008 Technology Innovation Award of the Wall Street Journal in the category software.[3]
