Cleversafe, Inc. is a Dispersed Storage Technology privately held company based in the United States and is pioneering Dispersed Storage Technology and software[2]. Cleversafe is the developer of Dispersed Storage Network software. Dispersed storage is a technology that uses erasure codes to split data into multiple slices, each of which is then stored to an independent storage appliance via TCP/IP. Due to properties of erasure codes, the dispersed storage system can tolerate multiple failures of individual storage appliances without losing the ability to recover data.

History

The company was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 2004 by S. Christopher Gladwin, the President and CEO of Cleversafe. Cleversafe is backed by investors like NEA, OCA Ventures, Harrison Street Capital, and Alsop-Louie Partners. Since the founding of Cleversafe in 2004 it has launched its Open Source project, expanded its partner program, and released several versions of its products.

Technology

Cleversafe is based on Cauchy Reed-Solomon Information Dispersal Algorithms (IDA) to separate data into unrecognizable slices and distribute them, via secure Internet connections, to multiple storage locations. This network ia called a dsNet. Data-transformed slices are stored across multiple storage appliances called Slicestors in a logical container called a Vault. A Vault spans storage appliances based on the data reliability requirements and locations that comprise the dsNet. This technology is an alternative to RAID and replication.

Awards

Since the creation of Cleversafe, it has collected numerous awards such as:

  • Chicago Innovation Awards 2008[3]
  • Wall Street Journal's 2008 Technology Innovation Award for Software[4]
  • 2007 City Lights Newcomer Award[5]
  • Horizon Award[6]

Open Source

Since the beginning, Cleversafe has been a sponsor of an Open source community movement. Cleversafe decided that open sourcing their dispersed storage software would provide advantages such as enabling comprehensive development for all types of applications and environments with dispersed storage[7]. Cleversafe licenses its Open Source software with the GNU General Public License.
