Bikini Bottom is a fictional city that appears in the Nickelodeon-produced cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants. Located at the bottom of the ocean, it is where the series' main characters live, and where most of the episodes take place.
Population
The population of Bikini Bottom is uncertain; however, the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg, confirmed that Bikini Bottom is a small city.
Bikini Bottom's populace, like that of the rest of the series, consists of various anthropomorphic fish, whales, crabs, sponges, octopuses, starfish, and most other forms of sea life. Some forms of sea life, like jellyfish, aren't sentient however, and are treated like pets or wild animals; an example of this is SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary.
Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas, is usually the only land creature seen living in Bikini Bottom.
Location
Aside from being located at the bottom of the ocean, Bikini Bottom's ___location is uncertain. However, Bikini Bottom is heavily reflective of United States culture; the residents use dollars and speak English, among other factors. Some fans speculate Bikini Bottom may be located in the Pacific Ocean, while others have speculated (due to Sandy being from Texas) that Bikini Bottom is located in the Gulf of Mexico, although the clear blue waters and white sands shown in the series do not match up well with the somewhat polluted Texas Gulf Coast, where it has recently been hit by several hurricanes as well. It is also possible that Bikini Bottom is in the bottom of the lagoon of Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands (the original "Bikini"). The most probable ___location of this city is that it is in the pacific ocean, west of Mexico, since in one episode, Sandy is seen flying out of this part of the ocean on an escape pod and into Texas.

- Sublime Seafoods
- Waverly Hills (a neighborhood inside the city)
- Oxygen Springs
Rock Bottom
About: Rock Bottom is a city geographically lower than Bikini Bottom. In fact, the road from there to here is so perfectly vertical, it can only be accessed by bus. Everyone in Rock Bottom speaks a language the same as english, except they blow a raspberry in between every 2-3 words. There is also a candy machine as well as toilets (though you can't tell which one's for men and which one's for women if you're not from this town). The city is also known as "The Trench of Advanced Darkness".
- Bus Station
- WSEA TV
- Marlin's Cave - the residence of the weather magician of the sea which is difficult to access.
- Rock Bottom Museum
- The Rusty Anchor (pub)
Shell City
About: Not really a city but it's just a gift shop on the surface owned by the evil Cyclops, selling dried out dead sea creatures. The road to Shell City is dangerous and no-one has ever returned from here, the perfect place for Plankton to sell Neptune's crown. It is located on a beach where SpongeBob and Patrick met David Hasselhoff. In a deleted scene of the movie (which can only be seen in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie DVD), Shell City is actually a city and is where Sandy (who looks ugly on land to SpongeBob and Patrick) constantly gets pursued all over the place by squirrel exterminators in black suits. She also mentions that there are buses that arrive here going to Bikini Bottom.
- Shell City Lagoon
- Gift Shop ("Shell City Marine Gifts and Sundries")
Ukulele Bottom
About: Nothing much we know of, apart from being the home of the annual jellyfish convention.
- Jellyfishers Convention Centre - home of the Annual Jellyfish Convention
Bass Vegas

Atlantis
About: Home of King Neptune's castle and the Poseidome.
- King Neptune's Castle
- The Poseidome
Tentacle Acres
About: Also known as Squidville, this particular town is so unique, due to the fact that it is a gated community of millions of squids (and only squids) living in Easter Island Heads. Sponges and starfish are not allowed to even set foot in this town, but SpongeBob and Patrick got in thanks to fried oyster skins that Patrick ate. Activities here include bike riding, clarinet playing, croquet and interpretive dancing. However, childish games such as playing with reef blowers are not allowed in Tentacle Acres.
- Full of Health (grocery store)
- Interpretive Dance Academy
Bikini Atoll
About: Bikini Atoll is the signature island above Bikini Bottom. The opening sequence of every episode of the show has the island shown right after Painty the Pirate (a painting) starts off the theme song. Sandy also dared SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr.Krabs and Squidward to go on dry land here and survived (although birds did attack the group). Some episodes also start off and end with Bikini Atoll shown. To humans (like David Hasselhoff), the island also signals the way down to its aquatic counterpart.
