The National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv is the largest and most important university of Ukraine located in the capital city Kiev.

It was founded in 1834 as the University of Saint Vladimir. First year it had 62 students at the only Faculty of Philosophy, which had two departments: The Department of History and Philology and The Department of Physics and Mathematics. In 1939, during the Soviet era, the University was named after Taras Shevchenko, the foremost poet and the iconic figure of the Culture of Ukraine.

Nowadays, Kiev University has 14 departments with more than 30000 students in 63 specialities. Each year, more than 20000 enrollees take part in entrance examinations, which less than third of them passes. The staff includes more than 2000 instructors and more than 1000 researches, among them about 82% have Ph.D. degree and 24% have D.Sc. degree. University has its own Kiev Botanical Garden, Zoological museum, Astronomic observatory, Scientific library, Computing center, Publishing house, etc.

Among the prominent graduates are Mykola Lysenko, Maxym Rylskiy, Mykhailo Starytskiy, and many others.
