Sheldon Whitehouse is the former state attorney general of Rhode Island currently running for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate in 2006.

Whitehouse's main primary opponent is secretary of state Matt Brown. He has been endorsed by Rhode Island Congressmen Patrick Kennedy and Jim Langevin. Both Whitehouse and Brown are seeking to defeat incumbent Senator Lincoln Chafee, a Republican seeking a second full term.
